Mysteries
“Can you fathom the mysteries of God?
Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?
They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do?
They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know? –Job 11:7-8
Ever experienced something that is beyond words? Ever try to explain a sunset? Describe falling in love? What’s the appropriate rhetoric for awe? Civilization has advanced exponentially in the fields of science and technology over the past century. The 57th anniversary of the first moon landing is just a few days away. Voyager 1 left our solar system back in 2012 and is speeding through interstellar space at about 38,000 miles/hr. It is still actively sending data back to Earth. That’s a lot of progress from Kitty Hawk in 1903.
The universe is vastly mysterious. Our reasoned and scientifically trained minds have solved many of creation’s mysteries. We know why the sky is blue and why the stars twinkle. But why do we gaze at the stars and dream? Knowing why the newborn cries after its first breath doesn’t come close to explaining how the sound changes the parent’s heart, forever.
If somebody'd said before the flight, "Are you going to get carried away looking at the earth from the moon?" I would have said, "No, no way." But yet when I first looked back at the earth, standing on the moon, I cried.” –Alan Shepherd
We’ll probably never experience the awe of standing on the moon looking back at Earth, but there’s plenty of awe to experience right here and now. All we have to do is open our eyes and hearts to God’s activity in the world around us.
See you Sunday!
