Freedom

“Sabbath… is about work stoppage. It is about withdrawal from the anxiety system of Pharaoh, the refusal to let one’s life be defined by production and consumption and the endless pursuit of private well-being.”
― Walter Brueggemann

Sabbath is sacred time set apart from the daily busy-ness of life. In a very profound way, Sabbath is freedom. Imagine taking an entire day off. No emails, no phone calls, no work. Some would call this heaven. Others might not. The need to be busy is addictive for some. Do you even know HOW to turn off your smartphone? Do you know what it feels like to be free?

When God freed the Israelites from captivity in Egypt they brought all their chains with them. They didn’t know what else to do. So, God gave them laws that would help them live out their new freedom. Sabbath was one of those laws. Pharaoh enslaved their bodies, their minds, and their time. This world will do the same to you, if you allow it.

God invites us into freedom. I would encourage you to set apart for yourself a sacred time. One hour a day. One day per week. Turn off the TV. Turn off the computer. Put down the smartphone. Tell Pharaoh to bug off. Drop the chains and open your eyes.

May you be transformed by God’s love in this sacred time.

See you Sunday!
